Cowboys bolster their defense with NT Linval Joseph, another big player, as Jerry Jones promised

On Tuesday, Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones indicated that the team is not finished strengthening its defensive line despite the additions of defensive end Carl and defensive tackle Jordan Phillips last week.

The Cowboys proved Jones right on Wednesday when they agreed to a one-year deal with veteran nose tackle Linval Joseph, a source confirmed.

The 6-foot-4, 325-pound Joseph was brought in to alternate with Mazi Smith at nose tackle and to bolster the run defense.

It was a move long in the making, as Joseph, 35, a two-time Pro Bowler, will rejoin Cowboys defensive coordinator Mike Zimmer, who coached him for six seasons with the Minnesota Vikings.

The Cowboys have significantly increased the size of the middle of their defense with the signing of Joseph and the 6-foot-1, 345-pound Phillips, who will alternate with Osa Odighizuwa at the three-technique tackle position.

They give the Cowboys more size and experience to withstand the running pressure and use the proper technique to occupy the blockers, leaving the linebackers free to make their plays.

Joseph has recorded 676 tackles in his career, which began in 2010 as a second-round pick of the New York Giants.

Last season he was a teammate of Phillips on the Buffalo Bills.
