A toddler from California had to be hospitalized after being mistakenly served alcohol in a restaurant.

Noemi Valencia was having dinner with her young daughter at the Fujiyama Japanese restaurant in Salinas when the child was given cooking wine instead of apple juice.

It was only when her daughter showed signs of drunkenness that she realized that the juice cup she had been drinking from was filled with alcohol.

Speaking to KSBW, Valencia said: “She was swaying, she was falling over, she was leaning against walls, she couldn’t hold her head up and her voice was slurred.”

Because of the incident, Valencia had to take her daughter to the emergency room, where she ended up spending the night.

According to Valencia, the wine was served in a standard children’s drinking cup. A blood test later revealed that it had an alcohol content of 0.12 percent.

The parents spent the night in the Salinas Valley emergency room. They said a blood test showed a 0.12% alcohol content in their daughter’s body.

KSBW spoke to the restaurant’s manager, who said the cooking wine was mistakenly labeled as “apple juice” in a large container, which led to the error.

Salinas police also said a report was filed on August 17 and they are investigating the case.

The young girl has now fully recovered and Valencia added: “Take appropriate precautions and be careful when storing or labelling things so that this doesn’t happen to anyone else.’

She added: “Parents: taste what is being served to your children.”

In a statement, the Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control said: “The California Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control is aware of the reports and is working with local authorities to investigate.”

In March of this year, a 12-year-old in Michigan became drunk after being served a soft drink at an Outback Steakhouse.

Mekyle Cureton and his grandmother Yolanda Collins are regulars at Outback in Livonia, Michigan, visiting a few times a month.

He told Fox 2 that his favorite order is a non-alcoholic strawberry daiquiri. But something wasn’t right about a recent scam.

“It didn’t taste like the other times,” Cureton said. “It didn’t taste normal.”

Cureton said after taking a few sips of the drink, he began to feel unwell.

“When I left, my head started to hurt and when I drank it, my heart started beating,” Mekyle added.

The child was taken to hospital where doctors helped him eliminate the alcohol from his system. However, Mekyle suffered a terrible hangover afterwards, his first at age 12.
