According to Nielsen, viewership of the Democratic National Convention jumped on the second night, peaking at an average of 20.6 million viewers, compared to 20 million on Monday.

As on Monday, the measurements were taken by 12 television networks: ABC, CBS, NBC, Scripps News, CNN, CNNe, FOX Business, FOX News Channel, MSNBC, Newsmax, NewsNation and PBS.

Barack and Michelle Obama gave speeches at the convention on Tuesday. During the former president’s speech, the number of viewers exceeded the evening’s average, reaching 21.6 million, according to Nielsen.

The first night of the DNC averaged 20 million viewers across 13 networks, surpassing the viewership of the first three days of the Republican National Convention (RNC) last month in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

According to Nielsen, the first three days of the RNC drew 18.1 million, 14.8 million, and 18 million viewers, respectively. Donald Trump headlined the final night of the convention, which drew an average of 25.4 million viewers and peaked at 28.4 million.

According to Michael Mulvihill, TV analyst and president of insights and analytics at FOX Sports, FOX Entertainment and Tubi, the DNC also had significantly more viewers as a percentage.

On Tuesday, 11.9 percent of DNC households surveyed in 44 major metropolitan areas across seven networks had television viewers, compared to 7.7 percent for the RNC. That’s a difference of more than 50 percent, Mulvihill posted on X.

He pointed out that the DNC had beaten the RNC by 21 percent in overnight numbers on the first night and by 10 percent in the national election.

“Expect this gap to narrow as the whole country gets on board,” Mulvihill wrote.

The program for Wednesday evening in Chicago includes speeches by former President Bill Clinton and former Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi.

The headliner is Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, who will officially accept the Democratic nomination for Vice President. Artists include award-winning musicians Stevie Wonder and John Legend.

On the fourth and final night of the DNC, Kamala Harris will take the stage, accept the party’s nomination for president, and officially close the convention.
