The Mets’ thrilling win on Wednesday was nearly ruined by a terrible call from the home plate umpire.

With the score at 3-2 and no outs in the eighth inning with Ramon Urias of the Orioles at bat, Colton Cowser broke through to second base on a steal attempt.

Mets right-hander Jose Butto sent an 87 mph changeup almost exactly to the center of the batting pit.

But when catcher Luis Torrens jumped from his crouch to throw out the potential base stealer, home plate umpire Marvin Hudson overturned the call and gave Urias the base instead of tagging him for the first out of the inning.

To make matters worse, Torrens had thrown Cowser out of the game by a wide margin in what would have been a strike’em out, throw’em out double play.

SNY’s broadcast featured a shocked Torrens and Mets manager Carlos Mendoza, who apparently couldn’t believe the pitch was ruled a ball.

The inning would continue with runners on first and second base and no outs.

Baltimore finally scored on a sacrifice fly by Adley Rutschman, tying the game 3-3 by the end of the eighth inning.

In the end, the mistake did not cost the Amazin’s the game.

One inning later, Mets rookie Jesse Winker hit a dramatic walk-off home run – the team’s second in three games.

With the win, the Mets are now 66-61, 2.0 games behind the Braves, and occupy the third and final wild card spot in the National League.
