How did he die? – Deseret News

According to Richard Simmons’ brother, the cause of death was an accident.

Lenny Simmons announced on Wednesday that the fitness guru’s death was due to “complications from recent falls and heart disease as a contributing cause.”

“This morning, Richard Simmons’ brother Lenny received a call from the Los Angeles Medical Examiner. The Medical Examiner advised Lenny that Richard’s death was an accident due to complications from recent falls and heart disease as a contributing cause. Aside from the medications Richard was prescribed, the toxicology report was negative,” Simmons family spokesman Tom Estey said in a statement to People.

“The family would like to thank everyone for their great love and support during this time of great loss.”

As Deseret News previously reported, Simmons was found dead in his Los Angeles home by his housekeeper on July 13. He was 76 years old.

According to ABC News, Los Angeles police who arrived at the scene said Simmons apparently died of natural causes and there was “no suspicion of foul play.”

In March, Simmons announced on Facebook that he had been diagnosed with skin cancer. He said the doctor “had to burn my skin to remove the cancer cells.” After three treatments, the cancer was completely removed, he said in a follow-up post.

Just two days before his death, Simmons gave one final interview to People magazine. He told the magazine how he planned to celebrate his 76th birthday and gave an update on his health.

“I feel good! I’m grateful to be here and to be alive for another day. I’m going to spend my birthday doing what I do every day, which is helping people,” Simmons said, according to People.

He continued: “I’ve never lived the life of a celebrity. I’ve never seen myself as a celebrity. People don’t know that, I’m actually a shy person and a bit of an introvert. But when the curtain goes up, it’s a different story. I’m there to make people happy.”
