MTA will add more stops to Long Island Rail Road for the Dalai Lama’s visit

The MTA is pulling out all the stops for the Dalai Lama’s visit Thursday morning at the UBS Arena, east of New York City.

Several morning Long Island Rail Road trains to Huntington, Ronkonkoma and Hempstead in both directions will schedule additional stops at Elmont-UBS Arena and/or Woodside for those traveling to the venue in Belmont Park. The additional stops will cause delays for commuters traveling on the Main Line, including Ronkonkoma, Port Jefferson, Hempstead and Oyster Bay.

The Tibetan Buddhist spiritual leader was staying at a New York hotel last month after undergoing knee surgery, his representatives said. After the operation, he spent some time recuperating in Syracuse.

Between 6:45 a.m. and 11:45 a.m., 21 trains operating on the Main Line will make additional stops at Elmont-UBS Arena and/or Woodside. According to the MTA, the schedule changes will be as follows:

  • Nine eastbound trains will make an additional stop at the Elmont-UBS Arena.
  • Five westbound trains will make an additional stop at the Elmont-UBS Arena.
  • An eastbound train will make an additional stop in Woodside.
  • Two eastbound trains will make an additional stop at both Woodside and the Elmont-UBS Arena.
  • Four westbound trains will also stop at both Woodside and the Elmont-UBS Arena.

According to Ticketmaster, the Dalai Lama’s appearance at the UBS Arena is scheduled for 9 a.m.

The Dalai Lama has visited New York City and the surrounding area many times in the past, including a four-day tour in 2010 that included stops at Radio City Music Hall and Hunter College.
