How to Fix Error 500 When Adding Gmail to iPhone Mail

It can be incredibly frustrating when you see an “Error 500” message when trying to add your Gmail account to your iPhone. As someone who has used Google services since the early beta days, I know how important it is to have uninterrupted access to your email. Losing that connection, even for a moment, can feel like a major setback. If you’re worried about missing important emails, don’t worry. The solutions below should help you get back on your feet quickly.

How to fix error 500 in Gmail?

1. Update iOS

Looking at the many answers on the internet, the most common solution to this problem seems to be to check for a software update on your iPhone. I have other solutions below, but checking for an iOS update is definitely the quickest. Just navigate to Settings > General > Software Update and see if one is available.

2. Remove the device from Google accounts

If the above solution doesn’t help in your case, a user on the Apple Support forums recommends removing the problematic device from your list of Google accounts, signing in again, and trying to add the account to your device again. Let’s take a look.

Time required: 2 minutes

To remove a device from your Google Account, follow these steps:

  1. First, navigate to your Google Account device activity page.
  2. Next you will find the device (in this case your iPhone) that is causing problems – select it.

  3. On the next page, select Log out.

  4. Try logging back into Gmail using your iPhone. Try this process a few times before moving on to another solution.

3. Try adding a passkey to the Google account

Admittedly, this solution may not work for everyone, so there’s a reason I’m listing it last. However, it may be that you just need to add your Google account to Passkeys. If you need to do this, visit Gmail.google.com from your mobile web browser and see if the Passkeys prompt appears. It’s a pretty simple solution as far as steps go, so it’s worth trying if the two solutions above don’t help.

If the errors persist, it might be time to contact Apple Support or Gmail account support. You can also read what to do if the verification prompt won’t allow you to sign in to Gmail on iPhone.
