Financing of water infrastructure announced

HAZARD, Ky. (WYMT) – Officials announced that the $40 million water infrastructure project in Buckhorn is nearing completion.

Leaders from multiple levels in Eastern Kentucky met at Hazard City Hall for an announcement regarding this infrastructure.

More than $10 million has been allocated for this project by the Economic Development Authority, and at least 11 grants over several years have now led to full funding.

The project includes a new water treatment plant in Buckhorn and transmission lines.

“This is a heartbreaking moment for Hazard, Perry County and Eastern Kentucky. For many years, the community of Buckhorn has been without water for perhaps 30 days. This will allow Buckhorn to have its own water treatment plant,” said Rep. Hal Rogers (R-5th District).

Officials said the transmission lines would benefit community members and the regional industrial park.

Senator Mitch McConnell (R-KY) issued the following statement on the announcement:

“I am grateful that these federal funds will help improve this important service to the community and set the stage for future growth in the region. My top priority remains helping our state rebuild and ensuring the people of Eastern Kentucky get what they need from the federal government,” McConnell said.

Buckhorn Mayor Simmie Bowling said community members are excited about the project.
