Man dies in overheated car – caregiver charged with manslaughter

A Johnston County man called 911 to report the death of a man in his care and was charged with manslaughter.

Rogers Lee Inge Jr., 55, of Warrenton, NC, told officers he is the caregiver for 22-year-old Dontarious Batts, who has special needs and is unable to care for himself. Inge said he is an employee of Universal Health Care and has also worked as a janitor at Cleveland High School.

Inge told officers he took Batts to work at the high school on Tuesday and left him in the car with the windows rolled up and the engine off starting at 8 a.m. When Inge checked on Batts at 10 a.m., he said, he was fine.

Inge said he then returned to work and left Batts in the vehicle until 4:17 p.m. When Inge returned to the vehicle, he told investigators Batts was dead.

Inge then drove to a fire station on Cleveland Road in Clayton with Batts’ body in the car, calling 911 on the way. Officers met Inge at the fire station and found Batts dead in the vehicle. They charged him with manslaughter and took him into custody.

Maj. Jeff Caldwell of the Johnston County Sheriff’s Office said an autopsy will be performed on Batts, but investigators suspect his death was caused by the heat in the car.

On Tuesday, the Triangle’s temperature peaked at 27 degrees. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, a car at 27 degrees can rise to 42 degrees in 20 minutes, and 49 degrees in 60 minutes. The National Weather Service says a car’s glass can act like a greenhouse, trapping deadly heat inside, even when temperatures outside are moderate.

Inge was taken to the Johnston County Jail where he was held on $35,000 bail.
