Lions sign cornerback to master the season finale

The Detroit Lions are dealing with a lot of injuries at the cornerback position. While the news regarding the situation in Week 1 is generally good, there is still one final preseason game to go before the focus shifts to roster cuts and preparations for the season opener.

Before practice on Wednesday, the team announced the signing of cornerback Rachad Wildgoose. They had a hole on the 90-man roster after placing wide receiver Tre’Quan Smith and linebacker Malik Jefferson on the injured list on Tuesday.

Wildgoose played collegiately at Wisconsin and is entering his fourth NFL season. He was drafted in the sixth round of the 2021 draft by the Buffalo Bills. He was released by the Bulls during cutdowns and then signed to the practice squad before the New York Jets signed him to their active roster. He appeared in five games for the Jets as a rookie.

Wildgoose was released by the Jets during final cuts in 2022 and acquired by the Washington Commanders. He appeared in 15 games for them this season, including three as a nickel corner. Washington signed him for a one-year deal for 2023, but released him during roster cuts last August.

Wildgoose didn’t play football last season but became a YouTuber. He signed with the Birmingham Stallions of the UFL in July for the 2025 season, but took part in tryouts with NFL teams during training camp before the Lions signed him on Wednesday.

The last preseason game is all about getting key players healthy or without further injuries into the regular season. Due to the injuries the Lions have, they need some completely healthy players for the last preseason game on Saturday against the Pittsburgh Steelers. Wildgoose meets these requirements.

With only Wednesday’s practice and the appearance against the Steelers to make an impression, Wildgoose’s chances of making the Lions’ 53-man roster are zero. But he could do enough to get back on the practice squad, or he could make someone else’s practice squad.
