Real Madrid star, who shone last season, “skips his contract and leaves for free”

One of Real Madrid’s stars in the 2023/24 season, in which the team won La Liga and the UEFA Champions League, is reportedly set to leave the club for good.

Carlo Ancelotti’s side won the league title and the European Cup last season before beating Borussia Dortmund 2-0 in the Champions League final at Wembley.

Their recent season started positively as they lifted their record sixth UEFA Super Cup thanks to a 2-0 win over Atalanta, in which debutant Kylian Mbappe scored his first goal for the club.

They then played a 1-1 draw against Real Mallorca to start their La Liga title defence, and next up is a home game against Real Valladolid.

One of their key players from last season has now reportedly decided that the 2024/25 season will be his last at the Santiago Bernabeu before moving on a free transfer.

Goalkeeper Andriy Lunin made 31 appearances across all competitions in 2023/24 while No. 1 Thibaut Courtois recovered from a serious knee injury. The Belgian was back in time for the final weeks of the season and played in the Champions League final, with Lunin an unused substitute.

The Ukraine international, who played at Euro 2024, is aware of his role as a substitute at the club and seems to have decided that he wants to play more regularly in the future. Sport claimed on August 21 that Lunin will fulfil his contract, which runs until the end of this season, before leaving Madrid on a free transfer.

Madrid reportedly wanted to sell Lunin in this transfer window, but it seems that there is no interested party willing to pay the requested transfer fee of 20 to 25 million euros (22 to 28 million dollars).
