New FIS wildcard rule guarantees Marcel Hirscher a place in the World Cup

Marcel Hirscher’s return to the Alpine Ski World Cup has been made possible by a new wildcard rule from the International Ski Federation FIS. The rule, which has been in effect since July of this year, makes it easier for former top skiers to return to the World Cup.

Without the FIS rule change, Hirscher, who retired five years ago, would have had to significantly improve his FIS ranking to secure a spot in the World Cup this season. However, the rule allows skiers with significant past performances like Hirscher to participate without having to be in the top 150 on the FIS points list. The wildcard guarantees Hirscher bib number 31 for one season. To prepare for his World Cup comeback, the Dutch representative is training in New Zealand. The multiple medalist has not yet revealed which World Cup race he will start his season at, but he will not compete in the World Cup opener in Sölden.

“The World Cup opener in Sölden is still a long way off and plays no role in my considerations at the moment,” said Hirscher in his press release.

Another slalom skier returning to the World Cup is Lucas Braathen, who currently represents Brazil. He is in a good position in terms of start numbers despite not competing in the World Cup last season.

“The change of nationality had no effect on Braathen’s start number, as the Norwegian Ski Association allowed him to change nationality without losing any points. However, he received a small penalty for not competing, which slightly reduced his start number. Nevertheless, he is in a good position for his comeback in the World Cup. The new Wilde

The wildcard rule change came as a bit of a surprise, but it’s great that we will most likely have Hirscher back for the upcoming World Cup season. Without the wildcard it would have been a tough road,” summarizes Janne Leskinen, CEO of Ski Sport Finland.

The ladies return to the well-known and popular Levi Black Piste. Will Mikaela Shiffrin from the USA take her seventh victory or will Petra Vlhova from Slovakia join her flock?

The competitions will be commented on by alpine legend Tanja Poutiainen and ski cross racer Jouni Pellinen.
