Disneyland removes “insensitive racial stereotypes” from opening ride

That is why Disney park visitors continue to flock to the opening attraction Peter Pan’s Flight. Recently, Disney made some changes to the popular Peter Pan The ride at Magic Kingdom has been redesigned to be more modern, and it looks like the same changes are happening at Disneyland as well.

When Peter Pan’s Flight at the Magic Kingdom reopened after a brief closure for renovations, the scene featuring Tiger Lily and the Never Land Tribe was changed to be more culturally sensitive and accurate.

The previous scene showcased harmful and false stereotypes and has been updated with more appropriate changes. Now, Tiger Lily is seen dancing with her great-grandmother while each animatronic is portrayed with dignity and cultural authenticity. According to The Orange County Register, we’ll see the same changes at Disneyland.

No timeline for the changes at Disneyland has been announced, but Disney has confirmed that similar changes will be made. Disney shared, “Walt Disney Imagineering has a long history of making updates and improvements to keep attractions fresh, authentic, relatable and relevant.”

Peter Pan is currently on Disney+, but includes a disclaimer that says the stereotypes portrayed in the original film “were wrong then and are wrong now.” Disney goes on to say that they want to “acknowledge its harmful impact, learn from it, and encourage conversations to create a more inclusive future together.” It seems that modernizing these rides to make them more inclusive is one of the steps the company is taking in that direction.

The new scene adds more sensitivity and relevance to the attraction. Peter Pan’s Flight at Magic Kingdom opened on August 16th and we will be watching to see when the attraction closes at Disneyland and see any updates that are made when it reopens.
