MTG Commander Cost Reduction Sleeper sees 300% price increase

Savvy Trader may not be a card that many MTG players are familiar with. This Commander card from Outlaws of Thunder Junction was easily overlooked. Despite this, the card’s price suddenly jumped from $1 to $4 in August. The card certainly has some powerful abilities, but new tech from Bloomburrow is inspiring players to pounce on this seemingly unexciting Human Citizen.

  • Mana value: 3G

  • MTG Set: Commander: Outlaws of Thunder Junction
  • Card Text: When Savvy Trader enters the battlefield, exile target permanent card from your graveyard. You may play that card while it’s exiled. Spells you cast from anywhere other than your hand cost (1) less.

Savvy Trader can be found in Outlaws of Thunder Junction’s Grand Larceny Commander Precon. Since this deck is all about stealing cards from your opponent and playing them, Savvy Trader reduces many of the casting costs of cards you steal from your opponent.

As for the reason for Savvy Trader’s current rise, it seems the card is seeing play in the Commanders published in Bloomburrow. These Commanders are popular alongside Glarb, Calamity’s Augur and Flubs, the Fool, and both want to throw cards into zones other than their hands. Glarb throws expensive cards off the top of your deck that Savvy Trader can lower the cost of. In addition to this innate synergy, Savvy Trader can also re-throw a card that Flubs may have discarded.

Finally, Savvy Trader is also played in Muerra and Trash Tactitian Commander decks, and this inclusion perhaps makes the most sense. Muerra acts as a card advantage machine, but you have to constantly spend eight mana to get its momentum draw effect online. Savvy Trader can recast something from your graveyard while also making expensive spells banished by Muerra easier to cast in a short amount of time.

This may have put Savvy Trader in the spotlight and encouraged players to try it out in other Commander decks. The card seems incredibly powerful in Muldrotha, the Gravetide, for example. Not only can you recast this card when it dies, but Savvy Trader also reduces the cost of anything you cast from your graveyard.

Should you consider this card?

If your MTG Commander deck casts a lot of spells from places other than your hand and can support Savvy Trader’s green color identity, it could be a strong addition. Four mana means this card really has to do a lot of work to make it worthwhile. Otherwise, a simple Eternal Witness might do a better job.

Unfortunately, many of the other cards that reward players for casting spells outside of their hand don’t have the green color identity. This certainly slows down Savvy Trader a bit, but as discussed in this article, the card has definitely found its place in the Commander format.
