After nearly a month of action between MLS and Liga MX teams, there are only four participants left in the 2024 Leagues Cup, with semifinal matches taking place on Wednesday night. Of the four remaining teams hoping to win the second Leagues Cup trophy ever next weekend, none play in Mexico’s Liga MX, but all hail from Major League Soccer.
Here is a match preview, betting odds and my prediction for each of Wednesday night’s semi-final matches.
League Cup semi-finals: Columbus Crew vs Philadelphia Union
The Union will enter Wednesday’s semifinal as underdogs, as Wilfried Nancy’s team has lost just two games in regulation at Lower.com Field since arriving in Columbus. Columbus fancy its chances against anyone at home, but Union enters the matchup in its best form this season, suffering just one penalty-kick loss in its last seven games and riding a wave of confidence after beating Cincinnati on the road and earning a shorthanded penalty-kick victory over Mazatlán.
The return of Andre Blake seems to have flipped a switch for a Union team that has won just once in 17 games without him this season. Columbus and its dangerous front three of Cucho Hernandez, Diego Rossi and Christian Ramirez pose a completely different threat on Wednesday. Union’s goaltender will have to put in another 5-star performance if they want any chance of reaching the final and playing it in front of their home crowd.
And of course, Philadelphia will have to make do without Tai Baribo, who received two yellow cards against Mazatlán at the weekend.
Betting odds:
Columbus Crew: -185, Draw: +350, Philadelphia Union: +425
Forecast:
1-1: Union wins on penalties

League Cup semi-finals: LAFC vs Colorado Rapids
LAFC comes into Wednesday night’s Leagues Cup semifinals having comfortably defeated their knockout round opponents Austin, San Jose and Seattle Sounders, beating them 9-1 on aggregate in those 3 games. They will be favorites to make the final at home, but will face a very confident Colorado Rapids team.
Chris Armas and his young Rapids team entered the Leagues Cup as the 46th team, but are confident they can handle whoever comes their way in Wednesday’s semifinals. Having beaten Liga MX’s Juarez 3-2 and Toluca 2-1, and defeated Club América – the competition’s top-ranked team – on penalties during their journey through the knockout stages, the Rapids will head to LA on Wednesday night full of confidence. They will be looking to pull off another upset en route to the final. Steve Cherundolo’s star-studded LAFC will no doubt be another tough task for the Rapids.
Betting odds:
LAFC -195, Draw: +360, Colorado Rapids: +475
Forecast:
3-1: LAFC
