Two men from Indiana died in a boating accident on a lake in eastern Illinois, a 7-year-old girl was found safe and sound.

The Illinois Department of Natural Resources said in a news release Monday that police received a call about a boater in distress at LaSalle Lake State Fish and Wildlife Area on Sunday, Aug. 18. When they arrived, they saw a capsized boat and found the girl on the shore with park visitors who helped her get out. Those same visitors helped her contact her mother and grandmother.

Investigators say the girl was on a 17-foot Crestliner with her grandfather (a 53-year-old man from Merrillville) and her great-grandfather (an 80-year-old man from Gary).

Both police and rescue personnel from numerous agencies assisted in the search for both, and they were finally recovered around 7:45 p.m. The LaSalle County Coroner pronounced them both dead at the scene.

The girl was wearing a life jacket. The two men were not.

They are trying to find out what caused the ship to capsize.

The lake is 2,000 acres in size and is located near Marseilles, about 84 miles southwest of Chicago.
