But Rogue hasn’t always been on Logan’s good side, and her new nickname for her old friend shows just how far these two Uncanny X-Men have come.
Uncanny X-Men #1 by Gail Simone, David Marquez, Matthew Wilson and VC’s Clayton Cowles reunites Rogue and Gambit with a grieving Wolverine when the ancient Caknucklehead calls on his fellow mutants for reinforcements in the form of a dragon. After his motorcycle is destroyed by their mystical enemy, Wolverine is stuck with the X-Pair for a while.
But as Logan begins to open up to his friends, Rogue receives a call from Cyclops, who interrupts Wolverine with the words: “Wait, Ground Bear.” And whether this new nickname sticks or not, it says a lot about the long-standing dynamic between Rogue and her old mentor.

The term “ground bear” refers to a specific species of Canadian brown bear, and since Wolverine is a hairy, wild Canadian, “Earthbear” is really the perfect nickname for himand it’s only natural that Rogue is the one who lends the name to Wolverine. Like many of her fellow X-Men, Rogue was taken under Logan’s wing from the beginning and she has supported him both as an X-Men and as an Uncanny Avengers. But before the two X-Men ever fought side by side, they were sworn enemies.

As a former member of the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants Rogue was originally an enemy of Wolverine and the X-Men – and that enmity only grew when Rogue stole the abilities of Logan’s old friend and future Captain Marvel, Carol Danvers. Wolverine, who is not the most forgiving mutant, was even less pleased when he learned that Rogue was joining the X-Men in Uncanny X-Men #172 by Chris Claremont, Paul Smith, Bob Wiacek, Glynis Wein and Tom Orzechowski. It wasn’t until she nearly sacrificed her life for him in the following issue that Rogue’s future Ground Bear finally began to trust her.
