Peter Molyneux says Masters of Albion could be his last game due to his smoking and drinking

At Gamescom this week, Fable creator Peter Molyneux revealed his next game – Masters of Albion – and now he says it could be his last. In an interview, Molyneux said he expects to be in his late 60s when Masters of Albion is finished, and if he made another game he would be in his mid-70s.

Molyneux told GI.biz that he wasn’t sure he would live that long. “My life expectancy is measured in days, not years, because of my lifestyle. I smoke and drink and don’t get enough sleep,” he said. “So if this is going to be my last game, what should it be? And the first thing that came to mind was that I wanted to go home. I wanted to go back to PC and console and make a game for gamers.”

Molyneux runs independent studio 22cans, which has developed mobile games such as The Trail and Godus. He said he was “disillusioned with mobile,” in part because when making mobile games, developers have to stick to a certain formula to make money, Molyneux said.

“I started to wonder… what should I focus on? I was 60 at the time and I realized this next game could be my last. I’m not announcing I’m retiring. I’m going to be found dead one morning with my head pressed against the keyboard,” he said.

In a separate interview with IGN, Molyneux talked about using Albion in his game, saying it refers to a historical term for Britain. As Molyneux sees it, it’s not Microsoft’s ownership of the Fable series.

“That’s like saying if you play one game in America you can’t play another game in America,” he said. “So Albion can’t be copyrighted. It’s the name for England and Wales and that’s why we get away with it.”

Molyneux went on to say that he honestly did not know whether Albion could be protected as a trademark. “You would think that as a responsible person I would have spent the last six months in law firms,” he said.

Microsoft owns the Fable series and the company had already granted the rights to Flaming Fowl Studios for the CCG Fable Fortune years ago (the game has since been discontinued).

If there are legal consequences, that will come with time. For now, Molyneux said he is looking forward to Masters of Albion because it “expands and expands” on the worlds he created in the Fable series.

“But it’s not really Fable 5 or anything like that,” he said. “If you’ve played Fable, then Masters of Albion will certainly look familiar to you. One of the things we have that we really wanted to perfect was humor. I think the Fable games aren’t so much about telling jokes, but more about giving you, the player, the opportunity to do ridiculous and funny things. And we have that in abundance in Masters of Albion. I think we’ve really nailed that.”

In another interview with PCGamesN, Molyneux spoke about his past of overpromising and underdelivering. He said he was “so, so, so sorry” for “selling games by overpromising” and mentioning features that didn’t exist as if they did. “I apologize to anyone who got excited and then got disappointed,” he said.

“I’m really, really sorry to those people. I didn’t do it because I had a plan. I really did it out of ignorance and now I’m really obsessed with only talking about things I can show,” he said.

Molyneux and 22cans also caused controversy with the game Curiosity: What’s inside the Cube? The winner was promised a “life-changing” reward, but in the end he received nothing.
