Prediction of the Charlotte Hornets’ performance in the 2024 NBA Cup

The schedule for the 2024 Emirates NBA Cup was released on Tuesday and the Charlotte Hornets will face Brooklyn as well as three Eastern Conference rivals in Orlando, New York and Philadelphia.

How will these duels turn out? Here is a prediction that is far too early.

November 12 at Orlando Magic – loss

Winning away in the NBA is difficult, especially during a midseason tournament when the crowd is really into it, rather than at a random midweek game. Orlando took a huge step forward a year ago with the core of Paolo Banchero, Franz Wagner and Jalen Suggs. The Hornets have lost five of their last six games against Orlando, including the last two on the road.

Nov. 19 at Brooklyn Nets – win

The Nets are in a massive rebuild. They have a handful of good players, but this is one of the few teams where I can say with confidence that the Hornets have more depth than them. I know I just said all that stuff about winning the tournament on the road, but this is one of the bottom teams in the Eastern Conference.

Nov. 29 against New York Knicks – loss

When New York comes to town, it’s basically a home game away for them. In recent years, newcomers from New York and New Jersey have taken over the Carolinas, and you can see that when the Knicks arrive. Not to mention, the Knicks are a clear favorite alongside Boston to represent the Eastern Conference in the NBA Finals. New York’s frontcourt is too much for this Hornets team.

Dec. 3 vs. Philadelphia 76ers – win

The Sixers have improved their starting lineup with welcome addition Paul George, but their bench isn’t all that exciting. While I expect the Hornets to be a mediocre team for the play-in tournaments, they won’t lose every single game against stronger competition. They will win some games they probably shouldn’t, just like the nights they might lose to the Portland Trail Blazers. It’s the NBA, weird things happen. I think the Hornets can steal this game with a big, energetic crowd. And yes, I know the 76ers fans are coming to this game too.
