Arrest for murder after four people die in house fire

A man has been arrested on suspicion of murder after a woman and three children died in a house fire in Bradford.

West Yorkshire Police were called by firefighters to a fire on Westbury Road shortly after 02:00 BST on Wednesday.

A 29-year-old woman was pronounced dead at the scene, while two girls aged one and nine and a five-year-old boy died after being taken to hospital.

A 39-year-old man was arrested at the scene on suspicion of murder and taken to hospital with critical injuries, police said.

“Absolutely devastating”

Det Ch Insp Stacey Atkinson, of West Yorkshire Police, said: “This is an absolutely devastating incident in which three children and a woman have lost their lives.”

“Our thoughts are with her family, friends and loved ones.

“Initial investigations indicate that the fire was deliberately set and we have arrested a man on suspicion of murder.

“He is in hospital today seriously ill due to injuries caused by the fire.”

Det Ch Insp Atkinson added that while the investigation was still at an early stage, “we currently believe the incident to be a family incident.”

She asked anyone with information or footage that could be of use to the investigation to contact West Yorkshire Police.

“Specially trained officers are assisting the family and we are working with local neighbourhood officers to investigate and ensure safety in the area,” she said.
