Liverpool are reportedly considering a surprise purchase that could cause a stir on both sides of Merseyside.

With doubts remaining over the futures of Luis Diaz and Mohamed Salah, the Reds have reportedly already contacted the representatives of former Everton striker Ademola Lookman about a return to England this summer.

That said, if they want to sign the Atalanta winger, they will need to act quickly, with both Paris Saint-Germain and Premier League rivals Arsenal interested and also keen on his signature.

Atalanta wants over £50 for Lookman

Despite his previous link with Everton, Liverpool’s interest in Lookman has increased as the 26-year-old striker continues to impress at Italian club Atalanta.

Atalanta are reportedly demanding €60 million (£51.1 million) for Lookman, a fee that reflects his growing importance to the Italian team.

Liverpool’s potential signing of Lookman is part of a wider strategy to improve attacking depth, particularly on the flanks, where manager Arne Slot has in the past packed his teams with quick players capable of outplaying defenders in one-on-one situations.

Currently, Liverpool can only fill this role with the aforementioned Diaz and Salah, while players like Cody Gakpo, Darwin Nunez and Diogo Jota prefer to operate more centrally.

Diaz has long been linked with a move to Barcelona (and recently to Manchester City), while rumors about Salah’s transfer to Saudi Arabia have not stopped.

Therefore, it makes sense for the club to try to strengthen itself in this area.

Lookman’s Italian Renaissance

Lookman, who began his career at Charlton Athletic before moving to Everton in 2017, struggled to make a significant impression during his time at Goodison Park.

After scoring just four goals in 48 appearances for Everton, the versatile striker moved abroad, where he revived his career first at RB Leipzig and then during a loan spell at Leicester City.

The turning point in Lookman’s career came after his move to Atalanta in August 2022. During his time in Serie A, he developed into one of the league’s most dangerous strikers, scoring 17 goals and providing 10 assists in 45 games last season.

Lookman played a crucial role in helping Atalanta win the Europa League title and reach the final of the Coppa Italia – a performance that caught the eye of Liverpool’s talent scouts.
