We are about a month and a half away from the start of the State Fair of Texas and people are excited about the Big Tex Choice AwardsSince 2005, the competition has been held to determine which new culinary creations can compete alongside classics such as Fletcher’s Corny Dogs. Today, Fletcher’s can be found in many places, including grocery stores and a food truck in Klyde Warren Park. However, their first appearance was at the State Fair of Texas in 1942.

You may not know that over 500,000 Corny Dogs are sold annually during the 24 days of the State Fair. This requires 1,500 gallons of mustard and 800 gallons of ketchup. The company says celebrities from Emmitt Smith to Oprah Winfrey have enjoyed Fletcher’s Corny Dog.

Will we still be eating Drowning Taquitos or Rousso’s Cotton Candy Bacon on a Stick in 80 years? Only time will tell. But Jennifer Schuder, senior vice president of marketing, says making the final decision is never easy.

“I’m always amazed at the creativity and innovation of the foods that make it to the finals of the Big Tex Choice Awards,” said Schuder. “The State Fair of Texas has been running this competition for 20 years and it just keeps getting better. I’m sure some of the dishes this year will be very popular!”

You can plan ahead: Here’s a lookbook of delicious treats waiting for you when you step through the turnstiles at this year’s show.
