St. Joseph Football builds on the learnings of last year and enters the 2nd season of MAIS 6A

MADISON, Mississippi (WLBT) – The Bruins are preparing for their first opponent on the schedule.

Last year, the Bruins moved from MAIS 5A to 6A. They finished 4-7 in their first season in 6A, but now, with a year of experience, they know what to expect.

“It was a big jump for us because the teams we were playing against had much bigger rosters,” said head coach Jason Moore. “So it was an adjustment and I think having a year of experience can only help us.”

This season, the Bruins realize they may not be the biggest or most experienced when they step on the court, but they believe looks can be deceiving.

“We’re definitely the underdogs in 6A,” said Sam Clements, last year’s right tackle. “We’re the smallest school, but we practice just as much as Hartfield and JA, and I mean, they’re really no different than us.”

“Underdogs are still underdogs, so we preach unity and play hard together,” said junior wide receiver Eli Dampier. “If we play hard together, it’s going to be hard to beat us.”

The players know that they may be small, but they are also powerful.

“There are a lot of schools that just have a lot more guys than we do,” said new junior quarterback Drew Wamble. “We have the underdog mentality, we want to do well and do our best.”

The Bruins are confident that their talent on both sides of the ball will take them far this season.

“We have good players who are really putting in the effort,” Moore said. “It will be exciting to see what these young guys can do.”

“We have playmakers at every position,” Dampier explained. “Receiver, slot, running back, QB, I mean, you name it, we have playmakers everywhere.”

The offensive leader can only agree that this group of guys is full of talent.

“I think we’re really explosive,” Wamble said of the team. “We don’t have a lot of talent, but we make up for it with our talent.”
