Keyontae Johnson agrees to a deal with the Hornets

Former Thunder forward Keyontae Johnson signs with the Hornetsaccording to a post from his agency Priority Sports (Instagram link).

It’s unclear what type of contract Johnson will sign with the Hornets. Charlotte has one open standard roster spot and one open two-way slot, so theoretically he could fill one of those open spots. A two-way deal or an Exhibit 10 seem to be the most likely outcomes for the former Kansas State forward.

Johnson was selected 50th overall in 2023 and played last season on a two-way contract. He averaged 1.2 points in nine games last season, but played more in the G League, averaging 19.7 points, 6.2 rebounds, 2.1 assists and 1.1 steals in 38 games with the Oklahoma City Blue.

He began his college career at Florida, where he played from 2018 to 2022. Johnson was a member of the All-SEC First Team in his sophomore season after averaging 14.0 points and 7.1 rebounds. Then, in 2020, Johnson made national headlines after collapsing on the court and falling into a coma. He made a remarkable recovery over the next two years before returning to basketball in 2022-23 as a member of Kansas State. He had a great season, averaging 17.4 points and 6.8 rebounds and was rewarded for his efforts with an NBA contract.

He continued his impressive play last season in the G League, where the 6-foot-1 forward converted 40.4% of his three-point attempts.

With the addition of Johnson, the Hornets would have 18 of a maximum of 21 players on the roster this offseason. 14 players are on standard contracts, two are on two-way contracts, one is on an Exhibit 10 contract and Johnson, whose contract has yet to be finalized.
