53-year-old man from Wausau dies on Sunday evening after fight in downtown


Thomas L. Schroeder, 43, of Wausau, was charged with malicious wounding, obstructing an officer and evading bail.

WAUSAU – A 43-year-old man is scheduled to make his first court appearance Tuesday afternoon on charges related to a Sunday night brawl that left a man dead downtown.

Thomas L. Schroeder of Wausau is charged with murder by assault in connection with the death of 53-year-old Chad Lattimer of Wausau. Schroeder is also charged with obstructing an officer and evading bail.

At 6:20 p.m. Sunday, officers responded to a 911 call in the 400 block of Washington Street after a 911 caller reported a fight between two men, according to a Wausau police news release. One man punched another, causing the victim to fall to the street. When officers arrived at the scene, they found the unconscious victim lying on his back with a head injury, the news release said.

The emergency services took the man to a local hospital in critical condition, the press release said. Schroeder left the scene of the accident, the press release said.

At 6:32 p.m. Sunday, an officer found Schroeder in the 300 block of North Fourth Street as he was walking back to the crime scene, the news release said. After a brief struggle, police arrested Schroeder.

The victim succumbed to his injuries on Monday evening, the statement said.
