Honie’s execution cost the Utah Department of Corrections over $280,000

SALT LAKE CITY — The execution of Taberon Dave Honie cost the Utah Department of Corrections more than $280,000, according to a cost statement released Tuesday.

Correctional officials executed Honie by lethal injection on August 8 at the Utah State Correctional Facility in Salt Lake City.

The cost of “medical services and supplies” was an estimated $260,906.58. The majority of that – and the largest cost of the execution overall – came from the purchase of pentobarbital. In July, the agency said in court documents that it had abandoned its original plan to execute Honie with an experimental cocktail of ketamine, fentanyl and potassium chloride and instead purchased doses of pentobarbital for an estimated $200,000.

Other medical costs included IV tubes, an ECG monitor and the execution team itself, according to a prison spokesman.

In addition to medical services and supplies, staffing and overtime for correctional officers cost $10,973.86, while “event costs,” described as “supplies and equipment,” cost $16,804.85, bringing the total to $288,685.29. Other event costs included lighting and portable toilets in the free speech zone, traffic signs, roadblocks, and food for officers.

Funds for the execution come from the general budget of the Utah Department of Corrections. The department does not receive any special additional funding for the execution of a death sentence.

The total price tag released Tuesday does not include the numerous years of appeals and legal costs associated with a death sentence. According to the Death Penalty Information Center, “The death penalty is far more expensive than a system that provides for life without parole as an alternative punishment.”

Honie, 48, was executed shortly after midnight on August 8. He had brutally murdered the mother of his ex-girlfriend, 49-year-old Claudia Marie Benn, in Cedar City on July 9, 1998, in front of her three granddaughters. In May 1999, Honie was sentenced to death for murder.
