Atsuko Tanaka, voice actress for games and anime, dies at the age of 61

Voice actress Atsuko Tanaka has died at the age of 61. According to her son HikaruShe died of an unspecified illness that she had been battling for the past year.

“Including her years of battling the disease, she led, in my opinion, a life that was typical of Tanaka,” he wrote in a translated obituary. “Serious, dignified and a little playful. I’m really lucky to have such a proud mother.”

Born on November 14, 1962, Tanaka is best known for voice acting for Motoko Kusanagi in the Ghost in the Shell series. She spent much of her voice acting career in anime such as Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure, Lupin III, and Queen’s Blade.

In terms of gaming, she provided the Japanese voice of Bayonetta in PlatinumGames’ series of the same name. She has also appeared in franchises such as Nier (as Kaine), Yakuza (Reina), and Devil May Cry (Trish), and was Lara Croft’s Japanese voice in several Tomb Raider titles.

Several franchises of which Tanaka was a member wrote their own obituaries after her death. Ghost in the Shell On Twitter, it was said that she gave Kusanagi “a presence that is at once calm and powerful and full of charm.”

“I had a great time playing the role of Kaine in Nier Replicant,” it says in Niers Þjórsárden Account. “We sincerely pray for the repose of your soul.”

Finally, a comment from the last anime Freeze: “We would like to thank you once again for your appearance at the Frieren funeral home and your performance and express our deepest condolences.”
