Girl killed in Judsonia mobile home fire

An 11-year-old girl died in a house fire in Judsonia on Monday afternoon, police said in a press release.

The identity of the 11-year-old girl was not immediately released. A news release from the White County Sheriff’s Office on Tuesday said the girl is a student at a local school district.

Lt. Chancey Warden, a spokesman for the sheriff’s office, said the girl’s identity would be released at a later date.

“It’s still so fresh,” Warden said Tuesday afternoon. “We want to give the elementary school time to prepare, and we want to protect the other children.”

Just before 4 p.m. Monday, officials received a call about a structure fire at a single-family mobile home in the 100 block of Beacon Way in Judsonia, according to the sheriff’s office. Multiple fire departments, including Judsonia, North White County, Gum Springs and Searcy, responded to the fire.

According to the press release, when officers and firefighters arrived on scene, they found that a young woman was still inside the burning house. Firefighters were unable to extinguish the fire before the 11-year-old died.

The girl’s body was recovered after the fire was under control and extinguished and sent to the Arkansas State Crime Laboratory for a forensic autopsy as per protocol, the release said.

White County detectives searched the scene for evidence and spoke to witnesses who may be able to help determine the cause of the fire.

Both the Arkansas State Police Fire Marshal’s Office and the White County Sheriff’s Office will conduct an investigation into the cause and origin of the fire and will also look into whether there are any “criminal elements” to the incident, officials said.
