Director of “X-Men 97” reacts to the award for the popular Gambit episode

The Marvel director behind it X-Men ’97 Episode 5, “Remember It,” responds to the show’s Emmy nomination for Best Animated Program. With the return of X-Men: The Animated Series in the form of X-Men ’97Marvel Studios achieved one of its greatest successes in 2024 when the Disney+ series became a huge success. One of the most memorable stories of X-Men ’97 Season 1 was marked by the tragic death of Gambit, who sacrificed himself in episode 5, “Remember It.”

Screen Rant recently spoke with Emi/Emmett Yonemura, the director X-Men ’97 Season 1, Episode 5, as their episode was submitted for the awards ceremony and eventually earned the show a nomination in the Outstanding Animated Program category at the Emmys. Yonemura, who was nominated for X-Men ’97 Seasons 2 and 3, told how they found out about it X-Men ’97 to be nominated for the Emmys and shares the following:


Thank you so much for the kind words. I was on vacation. I was on a boat and I wished my parents didn’t have any internet connection because when you’re on vacation I have to stop myself from working, but then I get this text from Charley (Feldman), one of our producers and writers, and they let me know that they’re saying, ‘Have you seen it?’ I was like, ‘Seen what? What are you talking about? I’m on a boat! I don’t have a care in the world right now.’ I was just overwhelmed. I was really happy. It felt really good because I know the whole team worked so hard on it and I know that the audience loved it and that just felt really good. I’m honored and speechless.

While it’s safe to say that some episodes of X-Men 1997 fare better than others, one thing is certain: the entire series was a masterpiece from Marvel.


Why the 1997 X-Men episode “Remember It” deserves all the awards


As much as X-Men ’97 has gained a whole new generation of viewers, it is always important to remember that this show also appeals to the audience that has followed X-Men: The Animated Series when it aired in the 1990s. The sequel continues the stories of all these characters that have stayed with fans for more than three decades. Seeing Gambit’s death after spending time and passion in X-Men: The Animated Series made after 30 years X-Men ’97 Episode 5 is a devastating sight for viewers who have followed this particular incarnation of Remy LeBeau.

But “Remember It” is also a strong episode about the existence of mutants in this universe, with the genocide of Genosha very X-Men ’97 its own world-changing tragedy. In many ways, “Remember It” was the final loss of innocence for many of the beloved heroes, as they realized once again that they live in a world that is still not entirely safe for mutants. Since its introduction in the comics, X-Men has been about the fight for mutant rights, while also being an allegory for prejudice against marginalized people in real life, which is why “Remember It” also tackles some really heavy themes.


Whether Gambit’s story is now completely over remains to be seen, as the X-Men ’97 The finale of the first season hinted at a possible resurrection by Apocalypse. If Gambit in X-Men ’97 Season 2 as one of the Horsemen of the Apocalypse, that will definitely make for another complex storyline. But for now, time will tell when X-Men ’97 Season 2 will finally be released on Disney+, as the series will most likely return in 2025.
