The Floor Room goes bankrupt, loses 200 jobs and closes its headquarters in Essex

The Floor Room, a flooring company dependent on insolvent carpet retailer Carpetright, has been forced into administration, resulting in the loss of 200 jobs across the UK – and the majority of jobs at its Purfleet head office. This comes after Carpetright was taken over by rival Tapi as part of a rescue package, but will still close over 200 stores and cut over 1,000 jobs.

The Floor Room, which operates 34 John Lewis department stores, has appointed PwC liquidators. The concessions and a flagship store in London’s Tottenham Court Road have been closed immediately.

As a result of the insolvency, 196 employees were laid off in the branches, at the head office in Purfleet, Essex, and in the provision of home services, PwC said.

Some staff in Purfleet will be kept on for a short period to help the company wind down operations. Adam Seres, joint administrator at PwC UK, said The Floor Room was “dependent on its sister company Carpetright for much of its trading infrastructure” and the company’s “financial position made it impossible to continue trading”.

The Floor Room is owned by Nestware Holdings, a flooring group that was also the parent company of Carpetright before its collapse. The Floor Room employed 201 people and operated in John Lewis stores across the UK, selling and fitting high-quality flooring and home furnishings.

Mr Seres added: “We deeply regret that this outcome has had to lead to the dismissal of the majority of staff. We are determined to help those affected and will work hard to ensure that dismissal requests are processed as quickly as possible.

“We know this is a worrying time for many affected and would like to thank all employees for the support they have given the company during this difficult situation.”
