Meghan Markle’s college classmate posts throwback photo from salsa class

Meghan Markle’s salsa dancing skills took years to develop.

Shortly before the 43-year-old Duchess of Sussex showed off her dance moves during her four-day trip to Colombia with Prince Harry, an old photo surfaced online allegedly showing Meghan taking a salsa class at Northwestern University.

Iris Amador shared a photo on social media showing Meghan in a group photo with four other people, wearing a black turtleneck and jeans (an outfit combination she later repeated in the photo she chose for her 2021 Christmas card with Prince Harry and her children, Prince Archie, now 5, and Princess Lilibet, now 3).

“The Duke and Duchess of Sussex visit Colombia, including #Cali, the world capital of salsa – music and dance that Meghan Markle loves and with whom we had salsa lessons at university,” Amador wrote in Spanish (according to a translation) under the photo on Instagram on August 17.

“Salsa lessons with the then future #DuchessOfSussex, in college,” she wrote in English.

Meghan graduated from Northwestern University in 2003 with a double major in theater and international studies. Daily Mail described Amador as a former classmate, and LinkedIn lists her as a 2002 graduate of the university in Evanston, Illinois, a suburb of Chicago.

Meghan and Prince Harry, 39, arrived in Colombia on August 15 at the invitation of Vice President Francia Márquez. The couple held events in the cities of Bogotá, Cartagena and Cali to highlight the core work of their Archewell Foundation. During the visit, they also highlighted other causes they have long supported, such as the military community and women’s empowerment.

During a stopover in Bogotá, the Duchess of Sussex danced to music during a performance at the National Centre for the Arts on August 15, her first day in the South American country. A few days later, on August 18, she took to the dance floor with Prince Harry in Cali.

As seen in a video shared by X, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex danced salsa at Jóvenes en Cali, a youth organization in the city, on August 18. Cali is known as the salsa capital of the world, and Prince Harry had Meghan twirling around on the dance floor before leaning in to give her a kiss on the lips.

The couple is known for expressing their love publicly and regularly dancing on the dance floor. The couple shared personal photos of themselves dancing together at their wedding reception in May 2018 in the docuseries Harry and Meghanwhich premiered on Netflix in December 2022.

In fact, Vice President Márquez revealed at the beginning of the trip that she was inspired to invite the Duke and Duchess of Sussex to Colombia after watching Harry and Meghan. The six-part series traced the couple’s childhood, their relationship and their 2020 retirement from their royal roles and became the biggest documentary debut week in Netflix history. It was released two years after the couple signed a multi-year deal with the streamer in 2020.

“How did I get to know Meghan and Harry? I first encountered them through the media and in particular I saw the Netflix series about their lives and their story, which moved me deeply,” Márquez said at a press conference on August 15.

“It motivated me to say, ‘This woman deserves to visit our country and tell her story.’ And without a doubt, her visit will empower many women around the world,” she added.

Márquez accompanied the Duke and Duchess of Sussex on many of their outings in Colombia, and she and Meghan appeared at the panel discussion “Afro-descendant Women and Power: Voices for Equality” in Cali on August 18.

The event featured leading Afro-Colombian women and entrepreneurs, and the Duchess of Sussex removed her earpiece at one point to address the crowd in Spanish. Meghan honed her Spanish skills during an internship at the U.S. Embassy in Buenos Aires, Argentina, after graduating from Northwestern.
