Student survives jump from 3rd floor of school building in Iloilo

ILOILO CITY — A Grade 11 student from San Miguel town, Iloilo survived a jump from the third floor of a high school building on Monday.

The 16-year-old student of Leonora Salapantan National High School was conscious after landing on his feet and was taken by rescue workers to the Western Visayas Medical Center in Iloilo City.

The San Miguel Police Department said the student was sitting on the railing of the building and then jumped off the edge. He landed on his feet and suffered no visible injuries, witnesses said.

The student is said to be suffering from an illness, but the family has asked that the nature of the illness be kept confidential and no further details be disclosed.

According to police, the student left notes that suggested he was struggling with serious problems.

The police also ruled out third-party liability in the incident.

Following the incident, school management cancelled afternoon classes and called an emergency meeting to clarify the situation.

The Iloilo Department of Education (DepEd) said the incident was “disturbing to our entire school community.”

“Our thoughts are with the student and his family during this difficult time,” the DepEd said in a statement on Monday evening.

DepEd Iloilo also said that the student in question is currently being provided with all necessary support to ensure that he or she receives appropriate care and guidance.

“Please be assured that we will continue to take proactive steps to ensure a nurturing and supportive learning environment in all schools in our school division,” the statement continued.

DepEd Iloilo also appealed to the public to respect the privacy of the student and his family.
