St. Louis Blues sign Philip Broberg and Dylan Holloway after Edmonton Oilers refuse to match offer documents

ST. LOUIS – The Edmonton Oilers waited until the last moment to decide the fate of offers the St. Louis Blues submitted for restricted free agents defenseman Philip Broberg and forward Dylan Holloway.

And in the end, both players will now move on to the Central Division.

The Oilers decided not to match the offer and allowed both players to join the Blues after the team submitted offers on August 13. In return, they accepted second- and third-round picks in 2025.

Broberg, 23, will join the Blues on a two-year, $9.16 million contract (average annual value of $4,550,917), and Holloway, who turns 23 next month, joins on a two-year, $4.58 million contract (average annual value of $2.29 million).

In a separate move, the Blues are also sending their 2028 third-round draft pick and unsigned 2023 fifth-round draft pick, defenseman Paul Fischer, to Edmonton for later consideration.

The Oilers made two trades on Sunday, acquiring defenseman Ty Emberson from the San Jose Sharks and also parting ways with veteran defenseman Cody Ceci and his $3.25 million average annual value after signing forward Vasily Podkolzin from the Vancouver Canucks. They obviously feel that these two young players are replacements for the departing players.

Edmonton had the resources and was able to place forward Evander Kane on the long-term injured list to get the above players under the salary cap for now, but would have had to factor in Kane’s salary cap hit of over $5.1 million if he was activated.

These are the first offer sheets in the NHL since 2021, when the Montreal Canadiens decided not to sign forward Jesperi Kotkaniemi.

Broberg (1.93 m, 96 kg) was originally selected by the Oilers in the first round as eighth overall in the 2019 NHL Draft.

Last season, the left-back played in 12 regular-season games for the Oilers and 49 regular-season games for Bakersfield of the American Hockey League, totaling 40 points (five goals, 35 assists); in 10 Stanley Cup playoff games with the Oilers, he recorded three points (two goals, one assist).

Broberg played 81 NHL games in the regular season and scored 13 points (two goals, 11 assists).

Holloway (1.85 m, 93 kg) was originally drafted by the Oilers as 14th overall in 2020.

Last season, the forward played 38 regular-season games for the Oilers and 18 regular-season games for Bakersfield, scoring 25 points (16 goals, nine assists); he also played in all 25 of the Oilers’ postseason games, scoring seven points (five goals, two assists).
