Why is the ICC moving the venues for the 2024 Women’s T20 World Cup?

The political situation in Bangladesh has created a climate of great tension in the country. The resignation of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasin led to a major breakdown across the country, which in turn led to violent incidents.

Former Bangladesh captain Mashrafe Mortaza was also not spared when a mob attacked his house. Mortaza was a member of the party to which Sheikh Hasina belonged, the Awami League. Even BCB chairman Nazmul Hussein was reported missing amid the extremely trying conditions the country is facing.

Given this chaos, it would have been very difficult for Bangladesh to host the tournament in such a short time. Countries like England, India, Australia, South Africa, New Zealand, etc. have even imposed entry restrictions on their citizens.

In an official statement, ICC Chief Executive Geoff Allardice said:

It is a shame that the Women’s T20 World Cup will not be held in Bangladesh as we know that the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) would have put on a memorable event. I would like to thank the team at BCB for exploring all options to enable the event to be held in Bangladesh but due to travel warnings from the governments of some of the participating teams, this was not possible. However, they retain the hosting rights. We look forward to bringing a global ICC event to Bangladesh in the near future.

I would also like to thank the Emirates Cricket Board for hosting on behalf of the BCB, and Sri Lanka and Zimbabwe for their generous offers of support. We look forward to seeing ICC global events in both of these countries in 2026.
