5 states in Nigeria with the highest diesel prices

The average daily consumption of diesel or automotive gas oil (AGO) in Nigeria is estimated at a whopping 14 million litres.

The irregular power generation in Nigeria is considered a curse for the country’s economic growth, as billions more are invested in alternative energy sources to power households and industries.

According to the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Agency (NMDPRA), the average daily consumption of diesel or automotive gas oil (AGO) in Nigeria is a whopping 14 million litres.

Energy Minister Adebayo Adelabu recently announced that Nigerians would spend N16.5 trillion naira on diesel, petrol and generators in 2023, an indication of the enormous resources being poured into alternative power generation.

However, most states purchase AGO at a cheaper price, while some other states have to pay higher amounts to purchase the product to power their homes and businesses.

The following table is taken from the Automotive Gas Oil (Diesel) Price Watch for July 2024, published by the The Nigerian Bureau of Statistics (NBS) has announced the five states with the highest diesel consumption per litre:

The three states with the lowest AGO price per litre were Kogi (₦1181.31), Kano (₦1211.11) and Osun (₦1246.82).

The NBS report also noted that the average retail price of AGO increased by 73.63% year-on-year from ₦794.48 per litre in July 2023 to ₦1379.48 per litre in July 2024.

However, there was a slight price reduction of 5.71% month-on-month, from ₦1,462.98 in June 2024 to an average of ₦1,379.48 in July 2024.

At the zone level, the region with the highest average price of AGO per liter was the Northeast zone at ₦1,600.85, followed by the Northwest at ₦1,377.98 and the Southeast region at ₦1,371.51.

The cheapest AGO price was recorded in the Southwest Zone at ₦1,266.57.
