BMW recalls more than 720,000 cars because the electric water pump could catch fire
BMW announced on Tuesday that the company is recalling 720,796 vehicles in North America because they are equipped with an electric water pump that, due to incorrect installation, can cause a short circuit and thus pose a fire hazard.
According to recall documents released by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, “an improperly sealed electrical connector at the water pump can come into contact with water and cause a short circuit.”
More specifically, “blowby fluid from the crankcase ventilation can collect on the intake air hose” and eventually “drip onto the connector,” where it may seep in and cause a short circuit.
“This could increase the risk of a thermal incident and, in rare cases, fire,” the recall states.

Dealers will replace the water pump and connector and install a protective shield at no charge. Notification letters will be mailed to vehicle owners on October 4. Owners can contact BMW Customer Service at 1-800-525-7417.

As of this month, BMW has received around 18 customer complaints related to the defective pump, according to the recall documents. According to the company, there have been no reports of accidents or injuries related to the recall.
This is the German automaker’s third recall since July. BMW recalled on July 24 more than 290,000 vehicles in North America due to faulty screws that can cause the inner cargo area rail to fall off in the event of a rear impact.
On July 10, the car company more than 394,000 vehicles recalled in North America because the airbag gas generators manufactured by Takata explode in an accident, potentially injuring drivers and Passengers with sharp metal fragments.
