Marriott, the world’s largest hotel chain with over 9,000 properties, is always looking for new accommodations to add to its portfolio. This time, the hotel group has signed a deal with Sonder to include their apartment accommodations in its branded offering.

Marriott licenses Sonder hotels to launch “Sonder by Marriott Bonvoy.”

Marriott has announced a long-term licensing agreement with Sonder that will enable the company to offer apartment-style accommodations in urban markets including North America, Europe and the Middle East.

Founded in 2014, Sonder primarily offers apartment-style accommodations and small boutique hotels. The company uses Airbnb as a sales channel and has listings in 44 cities in 10 countries.

These properties are marketed under a new brand: Marriott BonvoyMarriott expects to add 9,000 rooms to its portfolio by the end of 2024, with an additional 1,500 rooms in the pipeline. Marriott’s net room growth for the full year 2024 is expected to be between 6% and 6.5%.

Marriott Bonvoy members will be able to earn and redeem points for stays at approximately 200 Sonder by Marriott Bonvoy hotels starting in 2024. Full integration of Sonder hotels into Marriott’s digital channels is expected in 2025.

Tim Grisius, Marriott’s Global Officer for M&A, Business Development and Real Estate, describes this development:

We are excited to add the Sonder portfolio to our system, which will expand our portfolio of extended-stay properties in key markets around the world. Marriott has long believed in offering the right product at the right price for every travel purpose and generation of traveler. With the planned addition of Sonder by Marriott Bonvoy, we can offer even more options in the Marriott Bonvoy portfolio for guests looking for urban, apartment-style accommodations.

Marriott previously had its extended stay apartment brands in Residence Inn and also offers extended stays in Homes and Villas by Marriott Bonvoy and Marriott Executive Apartments. Now there will be this new brand, with over 10,000 rooms coming into the Marriott system over the years, which is a huge success for Marriott and the brand.

We still have to wait and see what earning and redemption opportunities this will open up for Marriott Bonvoy members.

Conclusion

Marriott and Sonder are entering into a licensing agreement. Under the agreement, Sonder’s properties will be available through Marriott channels under the “Sonders by Marriott Bonvoy” brand. Sonder offers apartment-style properties and small boutique hotels in major cities across North America, Europe and the Middle East. Once this is finalized, Bonvoy members will have the opportunity to earn and redeem points.
