Derry City host Shelbourne in FAI Cup quarter-finals in repeat of 2022 decider – The Irish Times

In a repeat of the 2022 decider, Derry City host Shelbourne in the quarter-finals of the FAI Cup at the Ryan McBride Brandywell Stadium.

After narrowly avoiding elimination in their away game at Kerry FC last Sunday, Bohemians now have to travel through Dublin to face UCD.

A top-flight club is guaranteed a place in the semi-finals when Wexford host Athlone Town at Ferrycarrig Park. The last eight will be filled by another second-flight club, Athlone Town taking on Drogheda United at Lissywollen.

The games will take place on the weekend of September 13-15.

The FAI Cup winner is guaranteed a place in the UEFA Conference League as a second round qualifier.

The average attendance for the last three FAI Cup finals at the Aviva Stadium was 37,806 and this day has even become a highlight for Irish football. St Pat’s have beaten Bohs in two of the last three finals, while Derry beat Shels 4-0 in 2022.

However, with one of the Premier Division leaders, Derry or Shels, set to be eliminated, the open draw could see two Premier League teams face each other in the final on November 10.

Shels and Bohs have both won seven times, Derry have lifted the cup six times, while Drogheda won its only title in 2005. UCD’s only success came in 1984 and Athlone won the FAI Cup in 1924.

Ahead of the draw, Republic of Ireland coach Heimar Hallgrímsson praised the atmosphere at the League of Ireland matches he attended.

“I have seen too few and I plan to see more,” said Hallgrímsson. “I have watched the teams, especially in the European games, and it could even change the culture of Irish football if (Shamrock Rovers and St Patrick’s Athletic) qualify for the group stage.”

Hallgrímsson will announce his first Ireland squad ahead of Nations League matches against England and Greece next month.

“There are a lot of games to watch as the (Irish) players are spread across many teams.

“There’s a lot of hype about the England game, but for me the more important game is the Greece game. It might sound strange to say this, but Ireland lost to them twice in Euro qualifiers, so we need to do better against them.”
