Dolphins sign lightning-fast former Pittsburgh Steelers running back

The Miami Dolphins have signed former Pittsburgh Steelers running back Anthony McFarland, the team announced on Monday. For McFarland, this is his first stop in the NFL after the Steelers.

McFarland spent nearly his entire rookie contract with the Steelers on their active roster and experimented on the team’s practice squad. The team’s fourth-round pick in the 2020 NFL Draft out of Maryland, several injuries slowed McFarland’s momentum while with the team. Over the course of several years, McFarland gained experience and got better and better, but was never able to stay healthy.

To improve his image in the NFL, McFarland went to the UFL and impressed as a starting running back for the San Antonio Brahmas. With his speed and agility, McFarland was an explosive player. He didn’t show much in the NFL during the regular season, but he has experience as a returner in addition to his versatility as a receiver and running back.

McFarland has only averaged 146 rushing yards and 87 receiving yards in his four years with the Steelers, but his speed and toughness make him a good fit in the Dolphins’ wide zone scheme. The Dolphins released running back Salvon Ahmed as a move to give McFarland a chance in the team’s training camp.
