The Stanley Cup finally made it to Boston – but it arrived in the hands of the Florida Panthers

The Bruins haven’t brought a Stanley Cup to Boston since 2011, but some members of the Florida Panthers made sure the trophy found its way to the Bay State this week.

Since the Panthers won the NHL’s top prize in June, the trophy has been traveling across the country and around the world as players, coaches and management staff make the most of the 24 hours they have it in their possession. Lord Stanley recently touched down in New England for a few days, stopping at the campuses of Boston College and Boston University, as well as Newton, Somerville, Arlington and Brewster.

Panthers center Evan Rodrigues, who played at BU from 2011-15, brought the trophy to his alma mater on Friday and was accompanied by his wife, Christina, their daughter and their two young sons, who were dressed as the trophy’s keepers with red ties and white gloves. They all completed the look with miniature replicas of the trophy – much easier for little hands to lift.

Rodrigues and Lord Stanley were greeted on the BU campus with applause from some current Terrier hockey players, followed by season ticket holders and BU program donors. Members of the BU marching band serenaded the group.

“It’s nice to bring it back here,” he said in a video posted on the Panthers’ YouTube channel. “I met my wife here and we now have a wonderful family with three kids, and this is where my career really got serious.”

After a stop at Agganis Arena, Rodrigues and company took the trophy to the top floor of BU’s newest building, the Center for Computing and Data Sciences, to enjoy panoramic views of the Boston skyline and the Charles River. He took it to his old dorm, through the streets of Boston and on a boat ride on the Charles.

As Rodrigues boarded the boat, a member of his entourage asked if he ever got bored of raising the cup above his head.

“Nope,” he said. “Never.”

A few days later, it was the turn of Panthers assistant general manager Brett Peterson to take the Cup, and he too decided to take it to the campus of his alma mater. He toured BC with the Cup, where he played from 2000 to 2004 and won a national title in 2001.

Peterson, his wife and their two children took the trophy to iconic locations in British Columbia, including Linden Lane, Bapst Library and Conte Forum. They concluded the campus tour at Harrington Athletics Village, home of the university’s baseball and softball programs, and invited the public for a photo op.

Peterson, a Northborough native, ended the day by taking the trophy to Buff’s Pub, a sports bar in nearby Newton.

“It’s part of the culture at Boston College,” Peterson said in a video posted to the BC men’s hockey team’s X account. “You always want to bring it back and empower the other guys that are here today to do important things. It means everything to me to bring it back here.”

When it was Arlington native Paul Krepelka, the Panthers’ senior vice president of hockey operations,’s turn to lift the trophy, he took it on a grand tour of his hometown.

Krepelka took Lord Stanley to Ed Burns Arena, home of Arlington’s high school hockey programs, and stopped at the local police and fire stations, as well as the Menotomy Grill, which he co-owns.

According to The Cape Cod Times, Panthers head counsel Paul Fenton brought the Cup to Captains Golf Course in Brewster. Fenton, who played hockey at Springfield Cathedral and BU, has owned a home in Brewster for 28 years.

The trophy was also spotted at the Orleans Bar and Restaurant in Somerville over the weekend.
