Kevin Kisner would be an excellent Ryder Cup vice-captain

Welcome to the daily ritual of Playing Through – Golf Talk Today.

Each day the crew discusses various elements of the PGA Tour, LPGA, LIV Golf and more.

Today I want to talk about Kevin Kisner and how he could help Team USA bring home the Ryder Cup title at Bethpage Black in 2025.

Kisner joined the NBC broadcast team for a few events this year during his PGA Tour career. He helped out at the FedEx St. Jude Championship last weekend and mentioned that he was an alternate captain on the President’s Cup team.

Jim Furyk, captain of the U.S. team’s Presidents Cup, appointed Kisner as an assistant in June.

Kisner mentioned this on the show and it gave me a great idea for the universe.

He must be one of Keegan Bradley’s vice-captains at the Ryder Cup.

Bradley already has two vice-captains, Webb Simpson and Brandt Snedeker.

Kisner would be a great addition to this group.

The former Georgia Bulldog holds a Presidents Cup record of 2-2-3 after stints with Team USA in 2017 and 2022.

He loves match play. Kisner won the WGC-Dell Technologies Match Play in 2019 and finished second in 2018 and 2022. The guy knows what it takes to play well in these tournaments.

“Match play is my favorite format in golf and I look forward to adding my expertise and insight to our team as we lead an incredible group of players to Montreal,” Kisner said in the press release announcing his alternate captain.

“Jim is someone I’ve looked up to throughout my career and he’s a great leader by nature, so I was thrilled when he called and asked me to serve as assistant captain in the fall.”

However, he never made the Ryder Cup team. Many speculate that Kisner could have been the captain’s choice in 2021, but Steve Stricker ultimately did not select him.

I remember Kisner calling the Ryder Cup “too political” after it was canceled. But that’s another reason why he’s perfect for the job. He could support Bradley’s mindset of having the 12 best players on the team.

His wit and great sense of humor would help lighten the mood in the locker room. Kisner is also a veteran of the PGA Tour. He knows a lot of people, and because he’s so personable, a lot of people know him.

Furyk’s selection of him as an assistant captain at the Presidents Cup will also give him the leadership experience, or at least enough of it, to help Bradley.

Kisner is perfect for the position, and if he continues to help with the broadcast, the 40-year-old will have even more opportunities to talk to players and help find the top 12.
