Last large plot of land in Roanoke Industrial Park prepared for commercial operations
A $10 million plan to bring jobs and investment to Roanoke will transform a wooded hill at Roanoke Center for Industry and Technology into a construction platform.
For a project whose financing was approved last week, workers will develop the last large piece of undeveloped land in the industrial park so it is ready if a company wants to locate there. It includes 82 acres, about two-thirds of which are suitable for construction.
Potential businesses often ask themselves, “How soon can I begin construction and operations on the property I’m interested in?” said Alicia Cundiff, the city’s economic development specialist. To accommodate, municipalities often prepare properties in advance, so the answer is: immediately.

In this case, the goal is to get the land “build-ready.” Engineers have already chosen the best spot for a building — a 37,000-square-foot building. The next step is to get permits, clear the land, and grade the building area. There is no official indication that a company is ready to build. The Virginia Economic Development Partnership lists the property as available.
Funding comes from the Virginia Business Ready Sites Program, which awarded $7.5 million, requiring the city to contribute $2.5 million.
