Gasoline prices have remained flat for several weeks, averaging about 45 cents lower than last year. For most of the season, gas costs were as much – if not less – than last summer, AAA data shows.

That trend could continue as the weather gets cooler and seasonal travel demand drops. Hurricane Ernesto exited the U.S. this week, sparing motorists from the effects of damaged oil and gas infrastructure even as it causes turbulence for late-summer beachgoers.

“With the switch to winter gasoline beginning in most countries in less than a month, gasoline prices will soon experience their seasonal cooldown – just as temperatures will soon,” GasBuddy analyst Patrick De Haan said in a statement on Monday.

Stacker compiled statistics on gasoline prices in the Kansas City metropolitan area (MO only) using data from AAA. Gas prices are current as of August 19.
