The Houston Astros defeated the Boston Red Sox 5-4 on Monday night at Minute Maid Park. The walk-off win was Houston’s 11th in the last 12 games.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

The Astros had their new signing Yusei Kikuchi on the mound at the end of the trade deadline. The outing did not start well for the left-hander, as he allowed a solo home run to Jarren Duran early in the game. Then, with two outs, an error by third baseman Shay Witcomb allowed another run, putting the Red Sox up 2-0.

The Sox turned to right-hander Tanner Houck, who got off to a better start, striking out a home run in the first inning against a Houston team that was still without the injured Alex Bregman.

Both starters had to deal with no hits in the second and third innings. But Houston’s offense went to work in the fourth inning. With two runners on base, Victor Caratini delivered a single that led to a run. After an error, he scored a second run and the game was tied 2-2.

Kikuchi went 5 2/3 innings that night. Another error put a baserunner on base in the last inning. The Astros got their revenge when Masataka Yoshida hit a two-run home run against Taylor Scott to give the Red Sox a 4-2 lead.

Houston was able to reduce its lead in the second half of the inning. Two singles put runners on the corners. Then Jon Singleton came in as a pinch hitter and scored an RBI with a sacrifice fly to make it 4-3.

The score remained that way until the bottom of the eighth inning. With no one on base and two outs, Chas McCormick hit a single with his bat. He then stole second base and was driven home by Mauricio Dubon to tie the game at 4-4.

In the ninth inning, Yainer Diaz was the hero, hitting a walk-off solo home run to left to win the game for Houston.
