PITTSBURGH (KDKA) — A community is mourning the loss of a 9-year-old girl who was struck and killed by a driver in Pittsburgh’s Homewood neighborhood over the weekend.

According to police, Courtney Carter was riding her bike on Rosedale Street on Sunday when the driver hit her. A makeshift memorial with balloons and a stuffed animal was set up and expanded on Monday.

“I just drove by and saw the balloons. It’s heartbreaking,” said neighbor Rica Cole.

“It was not intentional or malicious,” Cole added. “But you know accidents happen. We need to be more careful with our little ones.”

The Pittsburgh Bureau of Police said the driver of the SUV that struck the girl remained at the scene and is cooperating with investigators. After the crash, the girl was taken to a local hospital, where she died.

“It just destroyed me. It destroyed me. I’m a mother too and it destroyed me,” said Dr. Staci Ford.

Ford is a trauma specialist at Kyle’s Hope. Ford is helping the Carter family cope with the unexpected tragedy. She met with them on Monday and says they are still trying to process the loss.

“We are here to support the family, to allow them to grieve, to grieve respectfully, to give them their private, personal time to grieve and to do whatever we can to support them in that,” Ford said.

In a statement Monday evening, Mayor Ed Gainey said, among other things:

“Our Accident Investigation Unit is actively working to investigate this incident in real time. Once the investigation is complete, our Vision Zero Fatal Crash Response Team will conduct an on-site visit to determine what improvements can be made to ensure this never happens again.”

Pittsburgh police said the investigation is ongoing and no charges have been filed as of Monday evening.
