Children and police officers celebrated as heroes after dramatic water rescue in Texas

Bodycam footage from a Texas police officer shows the dramatic moments a woman was rescued after her car plunged into a pond.

The incident occurred after Jonquetta Winbush suffered an epileptic seizure while driving her car in West Orange earlier this summer, Assistant Chief Jessie Romero of the West Orange Police Department said Wednesday.

Romero said Winbush’s two children, including a 12-year-old boy and a 16-year-old girl, were in the car when she passed out and slammed on the gas pedal. The car then plunged into the water, but the children were able to escape.

In the video, Winbush’s son runs to the officer, later identified as veteran patrol officer Charles Cobb, and begs for help.

“She’s having a seizure! She’s drowned!” the child screams in panic as he tries to catch his breath and points to his mother. “She’s in the water! Help her!”

Cobb, who was in the area observing the traffic, calmly tells the child to jump into his patrol car. Together they approach the scene of the accident.

When they arrive, two Good Samaritans are already in the water trying to help, but Cobb steps in. He pulls Wishbush to safety and immediately begins CPR.

“She was completely unconscious,” Romero said. “He was able to get her pulse back while he had her lying there on the floor and resuscitate her until EMS arrived.”

After three weeks in intensive care, Winbush is breathing independently, according to Romero.

“She is still in the hospital, but she will make a full recovery,” he said.

According to KOGT, the city of West Orange honored Cobb for his heroic efforts. The media outlet also mentioned that two citizens, Corey Bull and Epifiano Munguia, were honored for their help, while the children were also praised.
