ANA impresses with effective and engaging Pokémon safety videoRunway Girl

All Nippon Airways (ANA) has been delighting travelers and aviation enthusiasts with its Pokémon-themed jets for years. Now it is showing Pokémon videos on safety precautions and disembarkation on board. on board two themed aircraft: “Pikachu Jet NH” and “Eevee Jet NH”, a Boeing 787 and a Boeing 777 respectively.

Both videos were created jointly by ANA and The Pokémon Company, but the airline’s safety video in particular deserves top marks for communicating important safety instructions in a clear and understandable way while also using cute Pokémon characters to support the demonstrations when appropriate.

According to ANA, the video is designed to help passengers “deepen their understanding of safety and provides easy-to-understand explanations of safety-related information and precautions to take in various situations on board, guided by Pokémon characters.” And it succeeds.

At a time when a disturbing number of airline safety videos are infotainment-focused and far removed from the atmosphere of the aircraft cabin, it is refreshing and impressive to see ANA convey the gravity of what can happen when safety instructions are not followed, while remaining engaging for children and adults alike.

It is important that the content is accessible. Subtitles are available in 18 languages – Japanese, English, French, German, Chinese (Simplified), Chinese (Traditional), Cantonese (Hong Kong), Korean, Thai, Vietnamese, Malay, Indonesian, Tagalog, Hindi, Spanish, Turkish, Italian and Swedish – and are displayed in the language of the country in which ANA operates.

Subtitles for domestic flights are in Japanese and English, while subtitles for international flights are in Japanese and the language of the country of operation.

What’s impressive is that two types of sign languages are used: Japanese Sign Language (JSL) and International Sign Language (IS). And ANA uses two different interpreters, bottom right, to make this distinction clear.

Watch the video to see how ANA provides important safety information to passengers worldwide in a simple, accessible and enjoyable format:

In a separate disembarkation video, the Pokémon character Pikachu gets lost on his journey and is reunited with his trainer thanks to the cooperation of ANA airport staff.

What is striking about this video is the gentle way in which ANA conveys a safety message to young children while reminding them that ANA team members work together to achieve positive outcomes.

The interiors of ANA’s themed aircraft also feature special Pokémon details, including on the seat covers and soft products. Themed uniforms complete the experience.
