Birmingham shooting survivor mourns boyfriend killed in same attack

BIRMINGHAM, Alabama (WBRC) – A woman who lost a loved one in a shooting in Birmingham just a week ago is now sharing her story.

The woman, who was also injured in the shooting, does not want to show her face for her own safety, but wants to raise awareness of the effects of gun violence in the hope that it can save someone else.

The survivor says messages, conversations and chat rooms on the social media app Clubhouse threatened her with death before her worst fears were realized.

“I thought I was going to die myself,” she said.

The shooting occurred on Saturday, August 10, in the Collegeville Housing Community.

“He had a gun. He had taken out his keys. We got into an argument. Shots were fired. My boyfriend was killed. I was shot three times. Once in the head with a fractured skull, twice in the back and 14 grazing shots on my back. I survived the shooting,” she said.

According to Birmingham police, the suspect, Roddregus Williams-Johnson, fired shots into an apartment, striking a woman and a man, both of whom died.

She said her slain boyfriend was not involved in the online drama.

Williams-Johnson is charged with capital crimes and attempted murder.

Even a week later, the survivor said, people on the Internet are still talking about it.

“They don’t care what’s happening in real life. They still think it’s a joke. Be careful and watch these people on social media,” she said.

She says you never know what the conversation might mean for you or your loved ones.

The woman wants people to know her boyfriend was a good person. “I just want him to know that I love him and that I will never forget what happened,” she said. “I will never forget him… It hurts me every day, but I get through it. I’m getting by. But it will never be enough.”

We are still investigating further aspects of this specific case. WBRC has reached out to Clubhouse to find out how they ensure the safety of their users.

Birmingham police said they were aware of the social media app Clubhouse, but did not say whether use of the app contributes to violence in the community.

When asked about the shooting, a representative of the HABD made the following statement to WBRC: “The safety of our residents is always our highest priority and our Public Safety Division is fully cooperating with the Birmingham Police Department (BPD) in their investigation.”
