Governor Pritzker hits the bars while taping an episode of the Daily Show in Chicago

Since the Democratic National Convention had just begun, the Daily Show largely skipped the political debates at the United Center in the first of its four Chicago-set episodes.

Rather, the focus was on the host city, which was teased by a number of jokers, including Governor JB Pritzker.

In one recorded segment, the governor deftly fended off tough questions (“Is ‘The Bear’ a comedy or a drama?”) from Jordan Klepper, while the Daily Show regular (and former Chicagoan) repeatedly steered her tour of Wrigleyville toward his favorite watering holes.

Their stops included the GMan Tavern, where they tried Malört, a liquor with an aftertaste that Klepper compared to “sucking on the leg of a wet dog.”

Governor Pritzker spends time on stage outside the Democratic National Convention (DNC) at the United Center on Sunday. The governor was a guest on “The Daily Show” on Monday, which taped episodes in Chicago.

Elsewhere, Klepper condemned political pandering and, like a true hypocrite, shamelessly garnered applause for his references to the Bulls, Giardiniera and various well-known pizza chains.

He delivered this talk in front of a green screen, part of the shiny, brightly lit, star-studded set that was miraculously installed among the worn boards and peeling paint of the 113-year-old Athenaeum Center for Thought & Culture.

The portions of the DNC-related material focused on various sideshows, particularly the Planned Parenthood van offering free abortions and vasectomies. “If I’m going to have (genital) surgery,” said moderator Michael Kosta, “it’s going to be in a building that’s 100 percent not going to get towed.”

Correspondent Grace Kuhlenschmidt reacted to the display of a giant inflatable spiral near the convention grounds by mistaking an image of the Cloud Gate sculpture in Millennium Park for “a giant clitoris.”

“That’s The Bean,” Kosta corrected.

“Aaaah… yes,” she replied.

The evening’s guest, Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer, created a relaxed atmosphere in her conversation with Kosta, a native of Ann Arbor, who noted that one of Chicago’s greatest assets is a lake named after her state.

Whitmer urged the moderator to move back to Michigan “so you and I can recreate the Pritzker-Klepper bar crawl.”

“The Daily Show” airs Monday through Thursday at 10 p.m. on Comedy Central and streams on Paramount Plus.
