Shiloh Jolie has agreed to drop Brad Pitt’s last name

Shiloh Jolie, the daughter of Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt, who formerly went by the name Jolie-Pitt, has officially received a name change and can now drop her father’s surname.

On Monday, People magazine confirmed that Jolie’s name change was complete, nearly three months after she turned 18 and requested to drop the Pitt surname.

Pitt has reportedly been estranged from Shiloh and the five other children he has with Angelina Jolie for years amid a lengthy divorce process that has included allegations of domestic violence.

In court documents detailed by the New York Times, Jolie accused Pitt of physically and verbally assaulting her and the children during a flight from France to California in 2016. In 2022, Pitt’s lawyer Anne Kiley released a statement denying Jolie’s account.

The couple separated after the alleged incident in 2016, but were not declared single until 2019. A dispute over the former couple’s joint assets continues and the divorce is not yet finalized.

Before she was allowed to change her name, Shiloh Jolie had to endure some setbacks.

Her legal request was delayed in July after a judge postponed a hearing because of an incomplete background check.

Under California law, anyone seeking a name change must undergo a background check to ensure they do not have a criminal record that would disqualify them from undergoing the process.

Once that box was checked, Jolie was required by state law to post a notice for one month declaring her intent to change her name.

After these steps were completed, a judge was able to grant Jolie’s request.

Shiloh’s decision to drop her father’s last name follows similar steps by her sisters Zahara Jolie and Vivienne Jolie.

Both have publicly removed Pitt’s name from their own, but it is unclear whether they have taken legal action to enforce this change.

In 2021, Us Weekly reported that Shiloh’s brother Maddox Jolie refuses to use his father’s last name except in legal documents.

After Shiloh first filed for divorce in May, a source close to Pitt told People he was “aware and upset” about her request.

“The memory of losing his children is obviously not easy for Brad,” the source said. “He loves his children and misses them. It’s very sad.”
